Living in Florida, we are exposed to sunshine all year round. Spending time in the sun increases our risk of skin cancer and early signs of aging. Regular application of sunscreen will decrease our risks. I am asked daily, “What is the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen, and which is better?” Mineral sunscreens will have one or both Zinc oxide and Titanium oxide in them, while chemical sunscreens have some PARABEN’s like para-aminobenzoid acids, oxybenzone as well as mineral protectors. Mineral sunscreens reflect and scatter the sun’s UV rays, chemical sunscreens have heat absorbing properties and are less effective in UVA rays with are harmful rays that penetrate deep in our skin causing aging and can alter the DNA of our skin cells. What are the newest mineral sunscreens out there? SkinMedica has a great sheer elegant mineral sunscreen called Daily Physical Defense SPF30 with silicone minerals giving a smooth soft silky feel, it is oil free, PABA-free, fragrance free and contains green tea and caffeine to protect against free radical damage caused by sun rays. La Roche-Posay Anthelios is a great ultra light sunscreen fluid with a matte finish with CELL-OX-SHIELD a breakthrough formula for fast-absorption and deeper cellular level protection. Both are recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation and deflect the harmful UVA/UVB rays providing broad-spectrum Protection.
Are you confused about your sunscreen? There are so many options and so many ingredients to watch out for, it just seems overwhelming. I am a firm believer that everyone should be wearing daily sunscreen. I am constantly asked, “What is broad spectrum protection?” The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that both adults and children use daily sunscreen with at least SPF 30. SPF stands for Sunburn Protection Factors, that protect you against Ultra Violet B rays, the cause of sunburns. Good sunscreen protection is found in many cosmetic products, like daily anti-aging moisturizers, mineral and liquid foundations, as well as lip products. A great broad spectrum sunscreen has both UVB (causes burns) and UVA (causes aging) protection with zinc oxide. Patients comment that anything over SPF 30 is not necessary…not true! The FDA has approved SPF 50 as a great protection for UVB rays, which is great for extended sun exposure – but remember, even water resistant sunscreens should be reapplied every 2-3 hours under long term sun exposure. As you prepare for summer time and start to use daily sunscreen, watch for products that provide both UVA and UVB protection with zinc oxide. Great products have a label showing they are approved by the American Academy of Dermatology.

The most common question I get is, “What single product must I have for anti-aging?” This is a tough question! There are many anti-aging products out there, but which one is better? You can get affordable cosmetic products that have great active ingredients for anti-aging.
First, Retinoids are topical derivatives of Vitamin A, whose skin rejuvenation effects are to help minimize fine lines, pigmentation, texture and oil production. Antioxidants help to eliminate free radicals from sunlight, radiations, stress and pollutants. They help improve fine lines, texture and pigmentation. Vitamin C- protects skin from UV damage. Copper -is the building block of collagen and Vitamin E- has shown to decrease redness and inflammation in skin. Alpha Hydroxy Acids like Glycolic, Lactic and Citric Acid are fruit acids that help exfoliate the top dead layer of skin. They improve wrinkles, collagen production, skin texture and appearance. They are also active ingredients in many chemical peels. Vitamin K has been shown to help reduce appearance of broken capillaries and redness associated with rosacea and bruising. Lastly, Hydroquinone is a skin lightening agent used to lighten sunspots, freckles, melasma and acne scarring.
These are a few important active ingredients found in our products that help with anti-aging.
For best results we recommend that you add these ingredients to your skin care regimen.
